Eastern Mediterranean University, also known as Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi, was established in 1979 in the northern part of Cyprus, Famagusta. The university started building its reputation with the engineering faculty which provided civil engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering as 3 year programs in North Cyprus. Later, in 1984, the Eastern Mediterranean University Engineering programs were extended to 4 year programs. Starting as an institute when it was first established, the Turkish republic of North Cyprus agreed to convert the higher institute to EMU as a university in 1986. Since 1986, the Eastern Mediterranean University began building more faculties and expanding it campus. Today, EMU has more than 10 available faculties with a wide range of departments.
As the university expanded, more facilities were built to grant the requirements for student education. A wide range of ceremonies, conferences, and congresses took place at the university campus.
Today, EMU offers education in a multicultural environment for over 20,000 students, being ranked as one of the largest university campuses in North Cyprus.
